About the destination

The city of Hanover, known for major fairs like the CeBIT computer show, is located on the banks of the Leine River and is the capital of Lower Saxony. Today, Hanover is recognized as an industrial and economic hub. Destroyed by two-thirds in 1945, the city now offers only a limited number of authentic historical sites. The Old Town, Altstadt, was partially rebuilt in a medieval style. Only the Herrenhausen Gardens, designed in the 18th century, preserve the baroque splendor of this princely city. Nevertheless, the Altstadt is perfect for a relaxed visit, where you can stroll along narrow streets and visit the Marktkirche (Market Church) and the Old Town Hall. One way to see most of the city’s sights is to follow the red line with its numbered attractions. Along this so‑called Red Route, visitors will see Kroepke Square, the New Town Hall, the opera house, the Sprengel Museum, the Kestner Museum, and the Lower Saxony State Museum. Hanover offers many attractions, an international atmosphere, and numerous events and exhibitions for all ages and interests. The city is vibrant year‑round: from the energetic spring festival and the spectacular International Fireworks Competition to the romantic Christmas markets.
