Saint Croix is an island in the Caribbean Sea, and a county and constituent district of the United States Virgin Islands. St. Croix is the largest of the islands in the territory, though the territorial capital, Charlotte Amalie, is located on Saint Thomas. St. Croix’s nickname is “Twin City,” referring to its two towns at opposite ends of the island: Frederiksted on the west end and Christiansted on the east. Frederiksted has a more relaxed pace than most of the island and becomes livelier during Carnival in January and when visiting cruise ships are in port. Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve contains the only known site where members of a Columbus expedition set foot on what is now United States territory. The park also protects prehistoric and colonial-era archaeological sites, including the only known existing example of a ball court in the Caribbean. Buck Island Reef National Monument protects a 71-hectare island just north of St. Croix. It is a popular destination for snorkeling.

Saint Martin is an island in the northeast Caribbean, approximately 300 km east of Puerto Rico. It is the smallest inhabited sea island divided between two nations, a division that dates back to 1648. The southern Dutch part is Sint Maarten, one of four constituent countries that form the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The northern French part is the Collectivité de Saint-Martin (Collectivity of St. Martin), an overseas collectivity of France. Top sights in Saint Martin include the Butterfly Farm, where you can stroll under a tented mesh among hundreds of colorful butterflies, and Pic du Paradis, the highest point on the island, with two viewpoints offering sweeping panoramas. Beaches are a major attraction on Saint Martin, with a total of 37 beaches. One particularly famous beach is Maho Bay Beach on the Dutch side, known for its close-up views of airplanes landing and taking off.
