About the destination: The Gili Islands are a group of three small islands — Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air — just off the northwest coast of Lombok, Indonesia. They’re a popular spot for visitors, with each island offering several small resorts, usually made up of simple huts for guests, along with a small pool and a restaurant. Most of the local population lives on Trawangan in a village that runs along the east side of the island just inland, which is also where most of the recent development is happening. Cars and motorised vehicles aren’t allowed on the islands by local rule, so people get around on foot, by bicycle, or in a horse‑drawn cart known as a cidomo. Scuba diving and freediving in and around the Gilis are also big draws, thanks to the rich marine life and colourful coral reefs. The best‑known dive sites include Shark Point, Manta Point and Simon’s Reef.
