3. Nagoya
Stay
About the destination: Nagoya, Japan’s fourth-largest city, blends heavy industry with long-standing tradition. Often passed over in favour of Tokyo or Kyoto, it rewards anyone who stops here with broad boulevards, excellent museums, and noticeably smaller crowds. Historically tied to the Tokugawa shogunate, the city still reflects that legacy today: orderly, confident, and quietly refined. Start with Nagoya Castle, known for its golden shachihoko (mythical tiger-fish) perched on the roof. The rebuilt main keep and beautifully restored Honmaru Palace reveal opulent samurai-era interiors and give a clear sense of feudal power and aesthetics. Then head to the Tokugawa Art Museum, home to armour, swords, and elegant tea ceremony utensils once owned by the ruling Tokugawa family, all set beside a carefully landscaped Japanese garden. Nagoya’s spiritual centre is Atsuta Jingu, one of the most important shrines in Shinto. Wrapped in a peaceful, wooded park, it offers a calm escape from city life and a chance to witness traditional rituals and seasonal festivals. In contrast, the Osu district crackles with energy: a lively mix of old temples, vintage shops, game arcades, and manga stores that captures the feel of modern urban Japan. Food is a major draw in Nagoya, with its own distinct “Nagoya-meshi” local cuisine. Try hitsumabushi (grilled eel on rice eaten in three different ways), miso katsu (pork cutlet topped with a rich red miso sauce), and tebasaki (crisp, seasoned chicken wings). Thanks to its central location and excellent rail links, Nagoya also works well as a base for day trips to places like Inuyama, Gifu, and the Japanese Alps, making for a stay that combines history, culture, and modern comfort.

About the destination: For over a millennium, Kyoto was the capital of Japan and it's likely the best preserved of all its cities. It's a stunning, lively city where modern life intersects with old traditional Japan. The city is nestled amongst the mountains of Western Honshu and serves as an ideal base for exploring the Kansai region. The city is steeped in heritage sites and culture, boasts a wide variety and number of eateries and is relatively easy to get around. Its rich culture and heritage seep from every piece of architecture and tradition. Kyoto is home to thousands of temples and shrines, including the spectacular golden Kinkaku-ji, Ryoanji with its Zen garden, the popular Kiyomizu-dera, Sanjusangendo with its life-size statues of Kannon and the more serene Tenryu-ji in Arashiyama. Also in Arashiyama, you'll find the famous Bamboo Grove. A fantastic thing to do in Kyoto is a walking tour of Gion, one of the main Geisha districts. Its wooden buildings and lamps create the perfect atmosphere. Kyoto is one of the world's greatest historical cities, brimming with temples, shrines, teahouses and imperial residences. Kyoto is a city steeped in culture and heritage and is a must-visit for anyone with an interest in Japanese history and culture.

About the destination: Kobe (神戸, Kōbe) is the capital of Hyogo Prefecture and one of Japan's ten largest cities. Situated between the sea and the Rokko mountain range, Kobe is also regarded as one of Japan's most attractive cities. Kobe has been an important port city for many centuries. Its port was among the first to be opened to foreign trade in the 19th century, alongside the ports of Yokohama, Nagasaki, Hakodate, and Niigata. In 1995, Kobe was struck by the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, which claimed the lives of over 5,000 people and destroyed tens of thousands of buildings. Today, the city is completely rebuilt, and few signs of the terrible event remain.

8. Hiroshima
Stay
About the destination: Hiroshima is an industrial city with wide boulevards and criss-crossing rivers, located along the coast of the Seto Inland Sea. While many people only know it for the horrific moment on August 6, 1945, when it became the site of the world's first atomic bomb attack, it has since transformed into a modern, cosmopolitan city with excellent cuisine and a lively nightlife. There are two World Heritage Sites in Hiroshima. One is the Itsukushima Shrine, and the other is the A-Bomb Dome of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial. Hiroshima is home to several historical sites. The Hiroshima Castle stands in the centre of the city. You can see the old town, which was formed during the Edo era, in Tomonoura in Fukuyama City and in Takehara City. However, in Hiroshima City, there are few old buildings as many were destroyed by the atomic bomb. Yet, some still stand resilient – for example, the Old Bank of Japan Hiroshima Branch, the Rest House, and so on. Around the Peace Memorial Park, you can see many statues dedicated to praying for the victims of the atomic bomb. The entirety of Hiroshima can serve as a textbook of its own history.
