Jeju Island is the largest island in South Korea, located in Jeju Province (Jeju Special Self-Governing Province). The island covers an area of 1,833.2 km² (707.8 sq mi), accounting for about 1.83% of South Korea’s total land area. In 2020, it had a registered population of around 670,000, the highest of any island in the country.
The island sits in the Korea Strait, just south of the Korean Peninsula and the South Jeolla Province. Jeju is South Korea’s only self-governing province, meaning it’s administered by local residents rather than politicians from the mainland.
Kimnyeong Beach marks the northern tip of Jeju Island, Songak Mountain its southern end, Suwolbong the western edge and Seongsan Ilchulbong the eastern point. Lying between the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea and the Sea of Japan, Jeju occupies an important economic, political and military position for South Korea.
The island was formed by the eruption of an underwater volcano roughly 2 million years ago. It’s home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes. Jeju has a temperate, relatively mild climate; even in winter, temperatures rarely drop below 0 °C (32 °F). It is a hugely popular holiday destination, and a significant share of the local economy depends on tourism and activity linked to its civil and naval base.

For over a millennium, Kyoto was the capital of Japan and it's likely the best preserved of all its cities. It's a stunning, lively city where modern life intersects with old traditional Japan. The city is nestled amongst the mountains of Western Honshu and serves as an ideal base for exploring the Kansai region. The city is steeped in heritage sites and culture, boasts a wide variety and number of eateries and is relatively easy to get around.
Its rich culture and heritage seep from every piece of architecture and tradition. Kyoto is home to thousands of temples and shrines, including the spectacular golden Kinkaku-ji, Ryoanji with its Zen garden, the popular Kiyomizu-dera, Sanjusangendo with its life-size statues of Kannon and the more serene Tenryu-ji in Arashiyama. Also in Arashiyama, you'll find the famous Bamboo Grove. A fantastic thing to do in Kyoto is a walking tour of Gion, one of the main Geisha districts. Its wooden buildings and lamps create the perfect atmosphere.
Kyoto is one of the world's greatest historical cities, brimming with temples, shrines, teahouses and imperial residences. Kyoto is a city steeped in culture and heritage and is a must-visit for anyone with an interest in Japanese history and culture.
