Mainz is the capital of the German federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The city lies on the banks of the Rhine River and on the opposite bank from the mouth of the Main River, making it an important river port in Germany. Mainz has several attractions and is especially notable as the city where Johannes Gutenberg invented the movable-type printing press. Today, Mainz remains highly important in the media sector; it is the headquarters of ZDF, the second most important television channel in Germany. During World War II, the city was heavily damaged, but much of its old town has been preserved. The historic center is known for its buildings constructed with red-colored stone. Mainz is also home to Johannes Gutenberg University, founded in 1477 and located near the city center. The campus includes not only classrooms and lecture halls but also housing, bars, and restaurants.
