Okavango Delta Botswana

The Okavango Delta, also known as the Okavango Grassland, is a vast inland wetland in northern Botswana where the Okavango River spills into a tectonic basin in the Kalahari instead of flowing to the sea. Its waters spread out across roughly 6,000–15,000 km² (2,300–5,800 sq mi) each year before evaporating or being absorbed by plants, creating a rich mosaic of lagoons, channels, islands, and floodplains that support exceptional wildlife. Some of the seasonal floodwater flows into nearby Lake Ngami. The delta occupies what was once part of the ancient Lake Makgadikgadi, which had largely dried up by the early Holocene. Moremi Game Reserve, a national park on the eastern side of the delta, protects some of its most wildlife-rich habitats. Recognized as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa in 2013, the Okavango Delta was inscribed in 2014 as the 1,000th site on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
