Sierra de Tramuntana Spain

The Sierra de Tramuntana is a dramatic mountain range running south‑west to north‑east along the northern spine of the island of Mallorca. It lends its name to the wider comarca that covers the same area. In June 2011, UNESCO recognised the range as a World Heritage Site for its outstanding natural beauty and rich cultural landscape. Its highest summit is Puig Major, which rises to 1,445 metres, making it the tallest peak in the Balearic Islands, closely followed by Puig de Massanella at 1,364 metres. The range is noticeably wetter than the rest of Mallorca, receiving up to about 1,500 mm of rain a year, compared with less than 400 mm in some other parts of the island. Because of the altitude it is also cooler, and short periods of snowfall in winter are not unusual. The Serra de Na Burguesa forms the southernmost stretch of the Sierra de Tramuntana.
